Pioneers Sweep Baker

Pioneer Basketball traveled to Baldwin City to take on Baker and came away with 2 big road wins on Saturday. The women won 69-66 and the men overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to win 76-71.

In the women's game, MNU maintained a slim lead in the first half. The Pioneers couldn't stretch it to more than 2 possessions and went to the locker room leading by 5. In the 3rd quarter, Baker fought back to tie and take the lead, but a bucket from Bailey Rinehart put MNU back up by 1 heading to the 4th.

With just under 4 minutes left in the game, Baker took a 1-point lead after a 3-pointer. Kyleesha Weston drained a 3 to get the lead back, but Baker made 4 unanswered free throws to take a 2-point lead. After an Ashli Lykins steal, Megan Balcom was fouled and hit 2 free throws to tie it with 2 minutes to go. Neither team scored in the next few possessions. Then after a timeout, Jasmine Webb made a layup with 21 seconds to go. Baker missed a 3 with 10 seconds left, and Balcom was fouled and split the the free throws. But Baker missed another 3 at the buzzer to give MNU the win.


Kyleesha Weston had 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals. Tristin Wicks added 12 points. Bailey Rinehart had 11 points and 2 steals. And Whitney Moia had 11 points and 11 rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.

#9 MNU is 3-0. The next game is Tuesday at Lindenwood-Belleville (0-7) at 6:00.

In the men's game, MNU jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held a 26-18 advantage with 9 minutes left in the first half. But Baker went on a 26-8 run to close the period and went to the locker room with a 10-point lead.

The Pioneers came out in the second half on fire, and the 10-point lead was erased in less than 7 minutes. With 9 minutes to go, MNU led by 7. The teams traded buckets down the stretch, and Baker got within 2 with a minute to go. But the Pioneers hit enough free throws to hold on and win 76-71.

Nick Syrie had 18 points and 4 assists. Gabriel Jordan added 17 points and 8 rebounds. And Jordan Whelan had 15 points and 6 rebounds.

MNU is 5-2 (1-1 Heart). The next game is Tuesday at Park (3-2) at 7:00.
