Pioneers Open With Win over #10 MACU

In his first game since the Fab Four loss in March of 2014, Nick Syrie recorded a triple double in MNU's 105-89 victory over #10 Mid-America Christian on Monday. A furious pace started the game, but neither team was able to connect consistently in the opening minutes. Finally, the Pioneers broke through with a 15-4 run to take a double digit lead. The Evangels responded with a 10-0 run, but MNU built another 11-point lead with an 8-1 run. The Pioneers took an 11-point lead into halftime.

Hudson Welty had 18 points, Aleksandar Zivkovic hauled in 8 rebounds, and Nick Syrie dished out 10 assists in the first half.

The second half was controlled by the Pioneers, and the only question became whether or not Syrie - who missed all of last season with a knee injury - would achieve the triple double. With 8 minutes remaining in the game, he had 13 assists, 10 rebounds, and 9 points. But he didn't score again until he hit a 15-foot jumper with 1:43 remaining to reach the milestone. MNU's lead reached as high as 24, and the Pioneers cruised to a 16-point win.

Syrie finished with 11 points, a career-high 11 rebounds, and 15 assists. Hudson Welty and Jordan Whelan led the offense with 19 points apiece. Aleksandar Zivkovic had a game-high 13 rebounds and 2 blocks. Jonas Page shot 6-7 from the field including 3-3 from beyong the arc for 18 points and 2 steals. Justin Randall had 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks. And Gabriel Jordan had 11 points and 6 rebounds.

#21 MNU is 1-0. The next game is Thursday at home vs. Ozark Christian at 8:00.
