The Pioneers continued their strong conference play with a win over William Penn University on Saturday, beating the Statesmen 2-0.
On a windy day in Oskaloosa, IA, the Pioneers battled against the wind in the first half, hoping to keep the Statesmen from getting on the board. The fist half saw both sides create great chances on goal. The Statesmen came the closest when a free kick fell in the box, but freshman goalkeeper
Anesa Curic was able to tip the ball over the crossbar and out for a corner, keeping the two sides in a deadlock.
The Pioneers entered the second half with the wind at their backs and would capitalize in the 55th minute. Defender
Sarah Schmidt took a free kick from just inside half field and placed the ball into the Statesmen's 18 yard box. The ball found forward
Taryn McClendon, who beat the WPU goalkeeper and placed the ball into the back of the net with her head, putting the Pioneers up 1-0.
The Pioneers would go on to create more opportunities and even saw a goal by
Steffi Krohn called back for offsides. However, in the 78th minute, Krohn would not be denied twice as she put the Pioneers up 2-0. Defender
Kelli Reid played a ball into the box from the left side of the field and found the streaking Krohn who beat the WPU goalkeeper and poked the ball into the back of the net.
The game was finished off with another strong defensive from the Pioneer backline and goalkeeper
Anesa Curic; recording their third consecutive shutout.
