Pioneers Fall in Double OT Classic

The Pioneers dropped to 2-2 in HAAC play after a 100-96 double overtime loss vs. Evangel on Thursday. The Crusaders took an early 6-point lead, but the Pioneers used a 17-5 run over 4 minutes to take their own 6-point lead. MNU kept the momentum for the rest of the half and took an 8-point lead into the locker room. The lead reached 12 points several times in the second half, but the Pioneers could not extend further and Evangel crept back into the game. With 8 minutes to play, MNU stopped scoring. Evangel went on a 14-2 run over 6 minutes to tie the game. Nate Launius put MNU back up by 2 with a minute left, but Evangel tied in on the next possession. Launius again scored in the paint to give the Pioneers the lead, but Justin Randall blocked a shot in the lane with seconds left only to have the ball land in the hands of defending national player of the week Korry Tillery's hands for the putback.

In the first overtime neither team took more than a 2-point lead, and the Pioneers had a chance to take a 4-point lead at the free throw line with 30 seconds left. The front end of the 1-and-1 was missed, and Evangel tied the game again to send it to a second overtime.

The Pioneers took a 3-point lead with 2 minutes left in the second overtime, but the Crusaders went on an 8-0 run to take control. A 3-pointer with 3 seconds left cut into the lead, but Evangel hit their free throws to win by 4.

Nate Launius shot 13-18 from the floor for a career-high 32 points, 6 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. Cale Brubaker hit four 3-pointers for 18 points and a career-high 14 assists. Gabriel Jordan shot 7-13 for 18 points and 6 rebounds. Justin Randall added 10 points, 7 boards, and 4 blocks. And Aleksandar Zivkovic hauled in 13 rebounds and blocked 6 shots.
