Pioneers Use Late Run to Beat Benedictine

A 10-2 run in the final 3 minutes gave #13 MNU an 82-75 victory at Benedictine on Saturday. A sluggish opening 5 minutes quickly became a scoring fest as the teams traded threes. But MNU took control of the game with a 33-11 run over 10 minutes to take an 18-point lead. In the second half, the Pioneers nursed a 12-point lead until Benedictine used a 14-2 run to tie the game with 11 minutes remaining. The game remained close over the next 9 minutes, but the closing minutes belonged to MNU. With the score tied and 2 minutes left, Kelsey Balcom scored and Kendra Flemming followed with a 3-point play to give the Pioneers a 2-possession lead. The Ravens managed a single free throw while the Pioneers made enough from the charity stripe to win by 7. MNU shot 58% for the game, including 53% from beyond the arc.

Megan Balcom went 6-12 from the field including 5 threes for a career-high matching 17 points. She also recorded a career-high 5 steals. Kelsey Balcom had 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. Kendra Flemming was 5-6 for 13 points. And Daria Sprew reached double figures with 10 points.

The Pioneers are 20-3 (12-2 HAAC). The next game is Thursday at Peru State (6-19, 4-10) at 5:30.
