Evangel Claims HAAC Tourney Championship

MNU dropped its first home match vs. a HAAC opponent since 2010 in a 5-set loss to Evangel in the HAAC tournament final on Saturday. The Pioneers led the 1st set 23-20, but gave up a 5-0 run to hand Evangel a 1-0 lead in the match. The Crusaders almost did it again in the 2nd set, turning a 2-point deficit into a 23-23 tie, but MNU won the last 2 points to tie the match. The 3rd set was all MNU. The first 9 points went to the Pioneers and they cruised to a 25-13 victory. In the 4th set, Evangel led by 4-5 points most of the way and won 25-19 to force a 5th and deciding set. The momentum gained in the 4th remained and the Crusaders controlled the whole way. A 15-9 victory gave Evangel the title and the automatic bid to Nationals.

Zoraida Heredia led MNU with 15 kills and 27 digs. Sofija Berezovska had 14 kills and 3 blocks. Lauma Knupke added 11 kills. Emily Hester and McKenzie Hayes had 10 kills apiece, and Hester added 6 blocks. Tashley Snyder recorded 32 digs. Kylie Pfaff had 11 digs. Becca Powers (35) and Rachel Kater (21) handled the assists.
