The MNU basketball teams went to Ottawa and swept a pair of games on Tuesday.
CJ Wesemann came off the bench to score 17 as MNU led big most of the night for an 82-63 victory. The Pioneers scored first and never trailed, building a 21-8 lead and taking a 21-point lead into halftime. Wesemann was 6-6 from the field including 3-3 from beyond the arc for 15 first-half points. The lead reached 32 point before Ottawa outscored MNU 30-11 in a 10-minute stretch to get the deficit to 13, but the Pioneers pushed the lead back to 20 and held on.
Wesemann had a team-high 17 points off the bench. Megan Balcom had 15 points and 2 steals in her first career start. Kyleesha Weston was 6-8 from the field for 14 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals off the bench. Daria Sprew had 13 points, a game-high 12 rebounds, and 2 steals. And Rachel Boan reached double figures with 10 points.
The #8 Pioneers are 1-0. The next game is the home opener on Tuesday vs. John Brown (1-0) at 5:30.
In the men's game, MNU used an early 12-5 run to take a 10-point lead in an 83-59 victory. Conner Langrehr put up 13 first-half point as the Pioneers took a 9-point lead to the locker room. Ottawa cut the lead to 5 early in the second half, but an 11-0 run pushed the MNU advantage to double figures and they maintained a 20-point lead for most of the second half.
Conner Langrehr had a game-high 20 points. David Clark had 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. Brandon Newton had 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals. Luke Thomas had a game-high 12 rebounds. And Nick Syrie recorded a game-high 5 assists.
