Pioneers Split a Pair in Texas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The #15 Pioneers pulled off a miracle comeback at #24 Our Lady of the Lake University on Friday, but fell at Texas Wesleyan on Saturday.

On Friday, MNU took a 2-point lead into halftime after an 11-3 run in the final 2 minutes. The Pioneers used another quick burst at the end of the second half to steal a 99-97 victory from OLLU. Trailing by 8 with 90 seconds left, Nick Syrie hit 2 of his 11 free throws to cut into the lead, and back-to-back turnovers by the Saints led to 4 more quick points. After OLLU split a pair of free throws, Luke Thomas completed a 3-point play to give MNU the lead. The Saints missed their next shot, and Syrie iced the game at the line to give MNU the improbably victory.

Luke Thomas had a career-high 33 points with 7 rebounds. Brandon Newton put in a career-high 23 points. Nick Syrie made 11 straight free throws en route to 13 points and 7 assists. And Nate Launius (11) and Conner Langrehr (10) reached double figures as well.

On Saturday, Texas Wesleyan jumped out to a 16-1 lead before MNU recorded their first field goal. The early hole got as big as 24-6 before MNU made a run to close the half. The Pioneers outscored the Rams 26-10 for the remainder of the half to take a 2-point deficit into the locker room. The game remained tight in the second half until TWU went on a 6-2 run to take a 9-point lead with 3 minutes left. The Pioneers hung in, however, and clawed their way game to a 1-possession game in the final seconds. Time expired on MNU, and they left Texas with a split.

Conner Langrehr put up 35 points (13-17 FT) and 4 assists. Nick Syrie had 15 points and 5 assists. And Nate Launius had 14 points off the bench.

MNU is 6-1. The next game is at #21 Park (2-3) on Tuesday at 7:00.
