Pioneers Win in Overtime

Stats | MNU headed to McPherson and ended their 3-game skid with an overtime victory on Saturday. The Pioneers came out dominating in possession looking to correct their recent losses. They quickly got off the mark through Kalyn Pfaff in the 15th minute off of a low shot from the top of the box. MNU kept pressing looking for another goal, however, the Lady Bulldogs found a way to counter and draw a foul in the penalty area which was converted to tie the score at one. MNU was not to be discouraged, however, and in the 33rd minute, senior Brittany Matthews scored her first goal of the season, fourth of her career, by crashing the back post and making sure the ball went in. Play continued with MNU enjoying the majority of the possession. Yet, in the 41st minute, McPherson won a loose ball about 30 yards out from goal and scored on a long range shot. The game went into half tied at 2.

The Pioneers came out from half time fired up. “I told the ladies at half time that we need energy in the game, to pick the pace of the game up, and start using the entire field," said Coach Kellar. "I thought our possession was much better than it has been as we connected loads of passes in the middle third. However, we still need to get much better going into the final third. We were a bit unlucky to not score in the second half especially when we had a couple of corners and set pieces that could have gone in.”

It didn't take long for the Pioneers to score the golden goal in overtime. Kyndra Zeigler scored a one-time strike off an assist on a corner from Ashley Peter. “I was very proud of the way our subs got in the game today and made a difference. Both Britt and Kyndra were in the right place and made sure that we walked away with a victory.” The Pioneers are 5-3 and play at Ottawa (4-3) on Wednesday at 4:30.
