Pioneers Swept 5,000 Miles Apart

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
The men's team lost to Indiana Wesleyan in Hawaii and the women's team lost to St. Thomas in Florida on Monday.

In the men's game, the Pioneers took on NAIA D2 #3-ranked Indiana Wesleyan without injured starting guards Nick Syrie and Rustin Dowd. Wesleyan took the lead 6-5 and held the lead until the Pioneers finally tied it at 51 with 9 minutes remaining in the game. IWU used a suffocating defense to force 19 turnovers and used long-range shooting (7-15 3fg) to build a 3-possession lead for most of the first half. The Pioneers clawed their way back into the game with a 17-4 run to take a 4-point lead with 8 minutes remaining, but IWU withstood the push and finished the game on a 10-1 run to win 70-65.

Jacob French had 17 points, 3 assists, and 4 steals. Luke Thomas had 16 points and 9 rebounds off the bench. And Justin Collard had 10 points, 5 assists, and 2 steals.

The Pioneers are 10-3. The next game is Tuesday in Honolulu vs. NAIA D2 #1-ranked Cardinal Stritch (13-0) at 3pm central.

In the women's game, MNU faced undefeated NAIA D2 #20-ranked St. Thomas. MNU came out slowly and St. Thomas built a 9-2 lead they never relinquished. The Pioneers shot well (52%) and outrebounded St. Thomas 38-24, but 21 MNU turnovers and 9-17 shooting from 3-point range for STU was the difference in the game. The Pioneers trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half before a 24-11 stretch over 10 minutes tied the game. But STU scored consecutive buckets to regain the lead and MNU couldn't find the tying score late to fall 73-70.

Rachel Boan had 19 points and 5 assists. Kelsey Balcom had 15 points and 7 rebounds. Kendra Flemming recorded a double-double off the bench with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Daria Sprew had 11 points and 9 rebounds. And Navia Palu had a game-high 6 assists.

The Pioneers are 10-2. The next game is Wednesday at Florida Memorial (2-6) at 5pm central.
