Men's Soccer Pick Up Conference Win

Pioneers defeat Culver-Stockton 3-1

The MNU Men's Soccer team picked up their first conference win this afternoon. Back home after a stint on the road the guys defeated Culver-Stockton College by a 3-1 score. On an absolutely beautiful afternoon the game did not match the weather. The Pioneers got off to a great start but sputtered in the second half.

With just 59 seconds gone in the first half, Trent Remmich hit the crossbar on a breakaway. He would have been left to rue that miss had it not been for the fact that just 1 minute 30 seconds later he scored the go ahead goal off of a cross by Luke Pontin. Just 5 minutes later Remmich added a second goal with an assist by Michael Shadfar. And then, to cap off his hat trick, Remmich scored again in the 34th minute off of a Luis Padilla assist. At this point the game looked like it could get out-of-hand. MNU went into halftime with a 3-0 lead.

The second half was a different story. The Wildcats came out with renewed energy and tried to make a game out of it. MNU did not respond well and in the 54th minute Culver scored a goal of their own to make the score 3-1. The rest of the half was a series of poor finishing by MNU as CSC continued to press. “You have to give credit to Culver for not giving in,” stated Coach Wardlaw. “They outworked us and outplayed us in the second half and when we were given the chance to put he game away we did not take advantage.”

For the game MNU outshot CSC 16-14, with SOG being 6-1 in MNU's favor. Corner kicks were 4-3 in MNU's favor. CSC's goalkeeper was credited with 3 saves. MNU's goalkeepers Matt Gow and Bret Olendorff were not credited with a save in the game. Culver falls to 5-4-1 on the season and 0-3 in conference. MNU moves their record to 6-4-1 and 1-1-1 in conference. The next game is a home game on Tuesday, October 12th against Missouri Valley who comes into the game tied for first place in the conference. The game is a 1pm start as the men's will start before the women's game.
