EMPORIA, Kan. – Representing the Pioneers, the throwing gurus of MNU went to work against NCAA DII teams as well as a few NAIA locals at the Emporia State Midwest Classic. The weather with its cold temperatures, intermittent rain, and increasing wind was not conducive to a good throwing day, but the Pioneers were there to compete. Compete they did as six placed in the top ten and three outdoor personal bests were set.
In the discus, freshman
Alexander Dawkins led the charge for the Pioneer men as he claimed the tenth spot. The Lady Pioneers followed with
Victoria Lotz grabbing a sixth place finish.
Meanwhile in the javelin throw, sophomore
Brody Stewart did two better than Dawkins as he took eighth place.
The Lady Pioneers were the first to grace the rings of the hammer throw with freshman
Alicia Hernandez-Mast setting a personal best. Following Hernandez-Mast, Lotz made the finals exciting by lingering in the top three before landing a walk-off throw that placed her in first. With that throw, Lotz now has the top two throws in the nation for the NAIA. For the men, Dawkins set a personal best with
Jacob Creswell landing his throw for a seventh place finish.
The final event for the throwers was the shot put. Senior
Caley Blosser led the Pioneers with a top ten finish while Hernandez-Mast continued her day of mastery with another outdoor personal record. For the day, Hernandaz-Mast led the Pioneers in the personal best count with a solid 2 out of 3 showing.
